From wines, to friends By IRENA JOSOEB

This simple Wine Night that initially saw 30 registered participants finally saw a total of 36 people turning up on the day itself, with the event lasting way beyond the expected 10pm.

Held at the cosy and tastefully furnished Casa Chile, in Chinatown, Singapore, participants started trickling in at 7pm, and were greeted by organisers of this Wine Night event from the Indonesian Professionals’ Association (IPA) and management of Casa Chile. They lost no time to get to know one another through the first wine of the night from South Africa, WoCT Dolphin Bay, and generous helpings of finger foods like sweet and savoury pastries and samosas.

Milton, a drinking partner of Casa Chile then took the attention of the swelling crowd at 8pm, sharing to all his understanding on wines, though a well-prepared presentation shown on an LCD screen. He also touched on the differences between sparkling wine and champagne, the wine-making process, types of grapes used, and comparing the olden vs modern way, how to tell if a wine is young or mature, etc.

The presentation lasted about an hour and thereafter mingling and various tastings were conducted on the various wines that were on the menu for the night, which included a Bernheim Pinotage Rose, a Groenland Antoinette Marie, Chilean Chardonnay and finally, a sweet dessert wine Spatlese Riesling, among others.

For sale at the event that night were wines at a special IPA price. Participants took advantage of the bargain to purchase their favourite wines from the night, while the attention of several ladies was captured by the Chilean Romor’s bags that were on display on location. These leatherware were hand-made by the handicapped.

IPA’s outgoing Vice President Fernando Tjia happily entertained a small captive crowd with his card tricks, while others went around getting to know other participants who came from different walks of industries ranging from banking, finance, realty, media, engineering, IT, etc. The wine certainly did its work to help the crowds mingle more freely by the end of the night, as participants continued to chat and stayed about till 11pm, with most taking leave by 11.30pm.

The main committee members thereafter continue their discussions with Case Chile management on possible future event collaborations till past midnight, before making their way home in a still sober state, though high from having held a very successful Wine Night with Casa Chile.

Casa Chile, started about six months ago, imports Chilean products such as foods, wines and leatherware, and also South African wines. They had organised corporate wine events for Lufthansa, IBM, etc. Occasionally, they would also get wine experts to give short talks on wine appreciation.
